About the project

Traffic data for ordinary questions

How Busy Is My Road? makes a large official dataset understandable without pretending it can answer more than it really can.

Why this exists

Questions about a road often begin with something simple: is it quiet, is it busy, or has traffic changed? The Department for Transport publishes an excellent long-running dataset, but a national bulk download is not an easy place for most people to start.

This independent website organises those official estimates around a postcode, location and map. It is not operated by, endorsed by or affiliated with the Department for Transport.

What we value

Accuracy before drama

Figures keep their official year, method and location. We never turn annual estimates into “live traffic”.

Context before rankings

Busy ratings compare points only with the same broad DfT road type.

Privacy by restraint

Location is requested only after a button press and used in your browser to calculate nearby points.

Coverage

The first release covers Great Britain: England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland has separate official traffic data and is not implied to be included.
